Based in North Texas, PGP’s Director of Architecture Josh Hemby shares his perspective on the lasting impact of architectural glass decisions, the continued evolution of Dallas architecture, and the buildings and design professionals that have helped shaped his career.

How long have you been in the industry / been with PGP?
I've been with PGP and in the architectural industry for 11 years. As Director of our Architectural Team, I have the privilege of representing Viracon, Kawneer, Construction Specialties, W&W Glass Engineered Solutions and many of our other outstanding manufacturing partners throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth and North Texas markets, and I now also help oversee our Architectural Team.
During that time, I've had the opportunity to work alongside incredibly talented architects, façade consultants, contractors, and glazing professionals on projects ranging from corporate headquarters and healthcare facilities to airports, data centers, and mixed-use developments. What I've enjoyed most is being involved from the earliest design conversations through construction, helping project teams balance performance, aesthetics, and constructability while bringing great buildings to life.
When you first started in the industry, what surprised you the most?
Probably how much thought goes into selecting glass. Before joining the industry, I had no idea how many factors influence that decision or how important it is to a building's overall success. From the outside, it's easy to assume glass is primarily an aesthetic choice or, frankly, all the same. Once you're immersed in the industry, you realize it sits at the intersection of architecture, engineering, sustainability, occupant comfort, daylighting, environmental concern, energy performance, and many other considerations. What surprised me most was how impactful those decisions can be. A glass specification influences not only how a building looks, but also how it performs for decades. It's rewarding to play a role in something that has such a lasting impact on both the architectural vision and the people who experience the building every day.
What city do you call home, and what makes its architecture distinctive?
I call North Texas home. What makes North Texas – and specifically, Dallas – unique is its willingness to evolve. You can find historic districts, iconic modernist buildings, world-class cultural institutions, and an ever-growing collection of contemporary towers all within the same city. Dallas isn't defined by a single architectural style. Instead, it continually reinvents itself while maintaining strong connections to its history. That creates an environment where architects have the freedom to be ambitious, innovative, and forward-thinking.
What has been the biggest change you've seen in Dallas?
The scale and sophistication of development. Dallas has always been a major business center, but the amount of investment and construction taking place today is remarkable. The skyline continues to grow, urban districts are expanding, and projects are becoming increasingly complex from both a design and performance standpoint. There's also been a noticeable shift toward sustainability, occupant wellness, and creating memorable experiences within buildings rather than simply constructing them. Expectations have risen across the board, and that's driving some truly exciting architecture throughout North Texas.
What building best represents the character of Dallas?
For me, it would have to be Fountain Place. Even decades after its completion, it remains one of the most iconic buildings in Dallas. Its geometry, glass façade, and integration with the surrounding landscape embody the city's appreciation for bold design and innovation. It feels timeless while still reflecting Dallas' ambition, confidence, and willingness to push boundaries. As an added point of pride, Viracon fabricated the glass for both Fountain Place towers.
What's your favorite building in Dallas?
That answer changes all the time. Many of my favorites are projects I've had the opportunity to follow throughout the design process. When you've spent months or even years working alongside a design team and watching their vision become reality, you develop a deeper appreciation for the finished building. Right now, Hall Park Hotel and Office are near the top of my list. They represent the kind of thoughtful design, quality materials, and attention to detail that make a project stand out.
I also have a soft spot for projects that never get built or might not have been built yet—perhaps they’re waiting for the perfect glass. Viracon’s new VNG 5024 might be just the glass! Some of the most creative and inspiring ideas I've seen currently only exist in renderings and design presentations, but they still leave a lasting impression, and who knows—they might end up being built one day.
What is your favorite view of the city skyline?
One of my favorite views is crossing the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and seeing the Dallas skyline come into view. The contrast between the skyline and the openness of the Trinity River corridor creates a uniquely Dallas perspective. It showcases the city's energy and growth while reminding you of the landscape that helped shape North Texas.
What is one architectural landmark every visitor to Dallas should experience?
The Dallas Arts District. Whether you're visiting the Winspear Opera House, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Dallas Museum of Art, or simply walking through the district, it's an incredible concentration of architecture, public space, and culture. It's one of the best examples of how thoughtful design can transform an urban environment and create a destination that benefits an entire Community.
Favorite Mexican food spot?
Mi Cocina has always been a favorite, especially for a casual lunch meeting with clients or colleagues. That said, North Texas has one of the best Mexican food scenes anywhere, so depending on the day, there are plenty of places that could make the list.
Most memorable project you've worked on?
It's difficult to choose just one. Some projects are memorable because they become part of the skyline. Others stand out because of the relationships formed during the design process or because they presented unique challenges that required creative solutions.
What I find most rewarding is knowing that every project leaves a lasting impact. Sometimes you're helping shape a city's skyline, and other times you're helping perfect a detail that only a handful of people will ever notice. That's one of the things I love most about this industry. Whether you're contributing to a landmark tower or refining a small architectural detail, you're helping create a better building, and both can be equally meaningful.
If I had to pick one project that stands out today, I'd probably point to the Knox District project because of the collaboration (lots of glass mockups) and complexity. All three buildings have glass supplied by Viracon by the way—so that helps as well!
